St. George Approves Sports Complex Development District

October 15, 2026•5 min read

Today's lead: St. George City Council APPROVES the Economic Development District near Airline Highway and Antioch Road.

▶️ Watch Good Morning, St. George Here

This is the biggest confirmed development since yesterday's brief. We've been discussing the proposed sports complex for several weeks, but now the City has taken a concrete step toward making it happen.

There's also a new potential construction timeline, an important distinction about future taxes, and a connection to the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair that residents should understand.

Today's recommended video: 4–5 minutes, with the development district as the clear lead.

Today's ranked stories

1. LEAD — City Council approves 55-acre Economic Development District

Status: APPROVED October 13. Sports complex construction and tax rates are not yet approved.

The City of St. George Council approved the creation of Economic Development District No. 1 during Tuesday evening's meeting.

The district encompasses approximately 55.5 acres near Airline Highway and Antioch Road.

The purpose is to establish a financing mechanism that could support a future indoor sports and civic complex.

WBRZ confirmed the approval in its October 13 report, published at 10:38 p.m. The report includes comments from Mayor Dustin Yates and Councilmember-at-Large David Dellucci. WBRZ

Here's what's new beyond the approval.

Mayor Yates told WBRZ that the earliest realistic construction start would be around the middle to third quarter of 2027, assuming everything moves forward as hoped.

That's a preliminary estimate, not an announced groundbreaking date.

The proposed facility could accommodate youth basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, school activities, graduations and community events.

Officials also envision attracting regional tournaments that bring visitors into the area.

Now, the tax question.

Councilmember Dellucci emphasized that the City is not proposing increased taxes outside the district.

Mayor Yates explained that any future additional levy would apply within the new district, potentially involving businesses such as hotels and restaurants.

However, creating the district does not itself establish a new tax rate.

The Council would have to take additional action to impose one.

There's an important distinction here for residents: although existing homeowners outside the district would not face a new district property tax, customers could ultimately pay an additional sales tax when shopping at businesses inside the district, depending on what is adopted later.

Louisiana law allows certain additional taxes within economic development districts, but requires further procedures before they can be imposed. legis.la.gov

Why homeowners and residents care: This project could bring recreational opportunities, jobs and commercial activity to St. George. But the financial structure, total project cost and potential tax burden still need to be established.

My commentary angle: Creating the district is progress. Now residents deserve to see the financial plan.

2. NEW — The proposed construction timeline raises another question: What happens to the State Fair?

Status: Confirmed existing event; future relocation remains unresolved.

This is a particularly interesting connection to yesterday's approval.

The Greater Baton Rouge State Fair returns October 22 through November 1 to the Airline Highway fairgrounds.

But earlier this year, Fair President Cliff Barton said organizers had been told that 2026 would likely be their last year at the Airline Highway location because of the planned sports complex.

Fair officials have explored moving to the former Woody Dumas Golf Course in Baker.

That move has not been finalized. WBRZ

The fair's official website confirms that this year's event will proceed at 16072 Airline Highway, with weekday opening at 5 p.m. and weekend opening at noon.

Weekend admission is listed at $15 for guests at least 48 inches tall. Children under that height enter free. Parking is free. gbrsf.com

Why residents care: The proposed sports complex could bring substantial recreational benefits, but it may also displace a longtime local tradition.

My commentary angle: There's room to be excited about a new sports complex while recognizing that the fair needs a viable permanent home.

I would mention this connection in today's video rather than treating the fair as an unrelated upcoming event.

3. TODAY — Residents can discuss the region's MOVE 2050 transportation plan

Status: Confirmed public meeting October 14.

The Capital Region Planning Commission is holding an in-person public meeting tonight as part of the final review of its MOVE 2050 transportation plan.

Meeting details:

  • Wednesday, October 14

  • 5:30–7 p.m.

  • 14734 South Harrell's Ferry Road, Baton Rouge

A second in-person meeting is scheduled for October 28.

Virtual meetings are scheduled for October 21 and November 4.

The draft plan's public-comment period began October 12 and runs for approximately 30 days. WBRZ

Residents can review the plan and submit comments through the official engagement portal.

Why St. George residents care: Decisions about future transportation investments could affect major corridors around the city, including Perkins, Highland, Siegen, Airline and other heavily traveled roads.

My commentary angle: Complaining about traffic is practically a Baton Rouge tradition. This is an opportunity to put specific concerns into the official planning process.

Verification limitation: The public engagement portal blocked direct retrieval during today's check. The meeting schedule is confirmed by WBRZ, but I could not independently inspect the latest draft's individual project fact sheets.

4. TODAY — St. George's State of the City and Founders Day celebration

Status: Confirmed event, October 14.

The St. George Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 2026 State of the City and Founders Day celebration today.

The event is scheduled for 11 a.m.–1 p.m. at White Oak Estate & Gardens, 17660 George O'Neal Road.

Mayor Yates is scheduled to address the City's accomplishments and priorities for the coming year.

The Chamber's registration page currently shows no remaining available spaces, although a waitlist is offered. stgeorgechamber.la

Official State of the City Event Details

Why residents care: The mayor's address may provide new information about city priorities, economic development, charter schools, public services and infrastructure.

What I'm watching: Whether he provides a specific project budget, financing plan or partnership details for the proposed sports complex.

I would not present any remarks from today's speech as confirmed before the event occurs.

5. Weekend reminder — Sundays in St. George returns October 18

Status: Confirmed upcoming event.

The second Sundays in St. George takes place Sunday, October 18, from 2–6 p.m. at Highland Road Community Park.

Parish County Line is scheduled to perform.

The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge has published a list of participating artists and makers.

Admission is free, and families are welcome.
